August Update

August 23rd, 2009

This month started quietly but has got busier and busier with a lot of callouts in the last ten days, many of them to visitors in the area who are intrigued by our Community First Responder Service. A climbing accident on Hen Cloud involved two of our group having to struggle up to the summit carrying all of the emergency kit, just getting there in time to see the Buxton Mountain Rescue Team positively bouncing up behind them! They did a brilliant job getting the casualty down to the Air Ambulance. The incident was a real team effort and what’s more happened on a rare day of glorious sunshine.

We are very grateful for the generous donation of £350 in loving memory of Peter Graham Higton of Longnor. These sorts of donations are tinged with sadness but allow us to go on and help others, which is a wonderful legacy. Thank you also this month to the Hollinsclough Mayfest Raffle for £150 and to two of our Group for a £40 donation. We have to buy some new medical equipment soon to keep up with new and improved standards, so thank you very much.

Swine Flu seems to have settled down for the moment and an injection will be available soon for the vulnerable but good hand hygiene is still strongly recommended. If you do feel feverish the best advice is to – Self isolate until symptom free – Take plenty of fluids and Paracetomol to control fever – Practice good hygiene, Catch it, Bin it, Kill it – Contact your GP or NHS Direct (0845 4647) for further information if concerned. The National Flu Information number is 0800 1513100 and the Web Site is www.direct.gov.uk/pandemicflu

July Update

August 10th, 2009

A surprisingly quiet month for the time of year but good that we have not been called out too often or missed too many calls.  Sometimes we can be on duty for three or four days with twenty four hour cover and not a call out but come off duty and we discover the pager has gone off – it’s so infuriating!

We are very grateful for donations this month from Mr George Mellor from Hollinsclough who celebrated his 90th birthday and sent us £100.  Also to David and Norma Twigg for their donation of £30 in appreciation for our recent help and the Hartington Dancing Club for £50. We are also grateful for the sum of £150 from Hollinsclough Action Group, which was raised as part of their May festival. Thank you very much indeed to all.

Three of our group recently took the ambulance to Hartington to give the Cubs and Scouts a look around it and to teach them some basic life saving skills.  It was a successful evening and we are happy to do the same sort of thing for anybody else.  Just let us know.

Swine Flu is in the news a lot but common sense and good hygiene is the best advice – Remember hand washing is the most important way of reducing the spread of infection.  If  you do feel feverish the best advice is to
- Self isolate until symptom free

- take plenty of fluids and paracetomol to control fever
Practice good hygiene – Catch it, Bin it, Kill it
