Our two newly qualified responders Alice Johnson of Longnor and Liz Plant of Elkstones have completed their observation shifts with the West Midlands Ambulance Service and are now operational and responding. We still wait for our other new recruits to get their dates for training. The cover we can now provide has increased dramatically over the last 6 months which is great news for our area. If there is anyone who would like to get involved with First Responders either actively or behind the scenes with administration then please get in touch.

Donations to the group since the last news letter are very gratefully received and we are hugely indebted to Maureen Probert, Charlie Barker and Christine Wilshaw from Warslow for a 2nd cheque totalling £272 from further proceeds of their book “Warslow in days gone by”. Anyone who still has not got their copy is advised to get one of the few remaining copies from The Greyhound Inn. Other donations this month include £190 from Brian & Ann Belfield from their 50th Wedding Anniversary, £160 from Longnor Calendars, £10 from Roy & Joan Weaver of Warslow, £25 from Longnor Sports, £210 from Ed & Brenda Cartlidge of Warslow from their recent Wedding Anniversary and £20 from John & Margaret Massey.

The change you all put into our little red collection boxes dotted around the area all adds up. Thank you to everybody for keeping the group running and for the support in our aim of replacing our vehicle.
Thank you all very much.

Since our last newsletter we can now welcome 2 newly qualified first responders to our group, congratulations to Alice Johnson of Longnor and Liz Plant of Elkstones, also congratulations and good luck to Darren Barlow who has been selected to take his enhanced training in September. Well done also to Lou Whitehouse of Colshaw, who after being inactive for a couple of years has retaken her exams and is fully responding again. We still wait for the other 5 new recruits to get their dates for their intermediate training, however this is all good news and it enables us to provide increased cover for the area. We would still like to hear from anybody who would be prepared to have a go at some of the administration work involved with a group of this nature.

We had a very successful fundraising evening at The Greyhound Inn on Wednesday 14th March, thank you to Adam, Jim and staff and everyone who came along and enjoyed a superb meal. Thanks also to everyone who donated some wonderful prizes for the raffle and thank you to all those who bought tickets and congratulation those who won. The night raised us almost £1100. During the evening we were presented with a very special cheque from Maureen Probert, Charlie Barker and Christine Wilshaw totalling £750 from the proceeds of their book “Warslow in days gone by” a terrific amount of work went in to compiling the book and we are very grateful to them for this very kind gesture. Anyone who would still like a copy of the book, limited copies are still available from The Greyhound Inn.

Donations to the group since the last news letter are very gratefully received from, the odd change you all put in the collecting boxes mounts up, thank you, a last count up from Kidd’s at Longnor Village Stores £21.76, Longnor Post Office £9.27, Longnor Chip shop £17.48, Cobbles £6.45 and Kidd’s at Brownspit Farm £23.11. Felicity Johnson- commission from her Pampered Chef Evening £35.09, Tarmac – Tunstead £100, Clowes Coaches £250, Richard Elks – proceeds from his Domino match £160.00.

Thank you everyone for keeping the group running and for all your support in helping us a bit closer to renewing our vehicle.
Thank you all very much.

As we go to press 2 more of our 7 new recruits are undergoing their training in the Potteries, further details on this next month. Cover the group has been able to provide has improved and in time will improve further, it is also hoped to delegate some of the administration work involved with a group of this nature.

We have launched a drive to raise funds to replace our response vehicle. The current vehicle was purchased new in 2004 at a cost of over £30,000 after liveries and lights, siren and radios etc had been fitted. So to replace it is going to be no mean feat in anyone’s standards. Every little bit of help and support would be greatly appreciated.

We have a fundraising event on Wednesday 14th March from 7pm at The Greyhound Inn, Warslow, with a 3 course meal @£20 per head with £10 of that coming to ourselves. Booking essential to The Greyhound Inn directly on 01298 687017. We shall also have a raffle on the night, if anyone would like to donate a raffle prize please contact us – otherwise why not join us for a wonderful evening and help raise funds for a brilliant cause.

Donations to the group since the last news letter are very gratefully received, from the collection box at Paddock Tea Rooms £77.02. We also received an anonymous donation for £75. A coffee morning organized by Rose and Geoff Robinson £100. In memory of Ailsa Kinsey of Warslow £140. Thank you to Family and Friends of the late John Prince of Moseley Cottage, Longnor for £200 in John’s memory. In memory of John Williamson of Badgers Croft, Longnor £295. Thank you also to the Williamson family for the very generous donation of £5000 in John’s memory. Thank you everyone for keeping the group running and for all your support in helping to kick start our new vehicle fund. Thank you all very much.

A reminder that in the event of you calling 999 for assistance, West Midlands Ambulance Service will mobilise a Community Paramedic Officer (CPO) and ambulance as well as the nearest First Responder group who are on duty which, dependant on the incident location, could be Flash & Longnor, Wetton & Alstonefield, Dane Valley, Mayfield & Ellastone or Waterhouses. As each group is run by a small number of volunteers, who may have work and family commitments, it is not always possible to provide 24 hour responder cover. This means all groups cover a wider area than their name may suggest. Consequently whoever is closest and on duty can respond to a call as directed by the ambulance control centre.

For any information about fundraising or if you would like to train to become a First Responder please contact us. Thanks.

The group celebrated its 11th birthday on the 11th of the 11th 2011, how clever was that! We are also celebrating, not only our three new recruits but seven new applicants who are going through their interviews and CRB checks prior to getting a place on a training course. Things are looking up for the group, an increase in numbers will not only mean we can give more cover but can also share some of the admin. We now have a fundraising and publicity ‘officer’, Darren Barlow from Warslow.

The group recently enjoyed a joint training session with the Longnor Fire Brigade on dealing with a trapped casualty needing to be cut out of a vehicle. It was a very interesting and informative evening showing new techniques that make the process safer for all concerned and quicker for the casualty. It’s hoped to have another session in the New Year.

Donations to the group since the last news letter are very gratefully received from, Louise Storer who raised £180 with the annual Longnor Duck Race, Sue Storer and the Longnor Well Dressing Team who gave us the Well donations of £41.63, Theresa Riley who held an exhibition of coins and raised £51.50, Edwin Bellfield of Leek who gave us £30 in memory of his wife Edith, a donation of £5 from a lady who saved her 5p coins for us and Trevor at Longnor Village Stores had £53.15 in the collecting box, that box does better than any! Thank you all very much. We are going to have to buy lots of new uniforms!

Merry Christmas and a Safe, Happy and Healthy New Year

At last it’s good to report that our group has expanded. We have three new responders who have successfully completed their basic training and are now doing shifts with the Ambulance Service to gain some practical experience before being let loose on the community! The new responders are Nettie Cook from Newtown, Darren Barlow from Warslow and Jonathon Rowley from Flash. There are also two more who will hopefully start training fairly soon. We are now hoping that one or two of the group who are on the inactive list might be tempted back if they have someone to go on duty with. It is so much better to go out on a call as a pair so that one can operate the radio and map read while the other can concentrate on driving and so much better to share the carrying of our very heavy bags, especially if it’s to Three Shires Head!

Since the last news letter in July we have very gratefully received a donation of £350 from Erica and Charlotte Taylor, Charlotte was the retiring Warslow Gala Queen and over her year, with Erica’s help, raised money for our group and the Air Ambulance. Well done and thank you. Also from Warslow, Joe and Pam Critchlow gave us £220 following a 65th birthday, again many thanks. The collecting boxes at the Greyhound, Warslow and the Hartington Cheese Shop gave us £15.68 and £14.76 respectively, thank you.

The new vehicle fund is building slowly but the old vehicle has required some major surgery recently. Hopefully is now fit again to go into the winter and we will all keep trying to build up that fund.

KEEP WELL and KEEP SAFE

We remain ever optimistic that the group will expand and our two possible new recruits could start training as soon as August if all goes well. The great thing is that the training could be close to home, not all the way to Stoke, if the local responder groups can get enough trainees together – so come on anyone who might be thinking about becoming a first responder.

We start the list of thanks for donations with an apology to Victor and Edith Fearns for getting their name wrong in the last report when thanking them for their Golden Wedding Anniversary donation, sorry about that. Quarnford Parish Council have made two very generous donations to the group totalling £450 and the collecting boxes, thank you to everyone who puts their change into them, are a remarkable source of income – The Paddock Tea Rooms at the Roaches, £91 – Flash Stores, £29.71 – Longnor Wood Caravan Park, £49.57 – The New Inn at Flash, £10.58 – The Greyhound at Warslow, £21.17 and Longnor Village Shop, £24.87 – brilliant. Thank you to Mark Rogers for donating his £10 prize to us for returning the Hollinsclough Questionnaire and we also thank the friends and family of the late Roy Wood from Elkstones for their wonderful donation of £681.50 in his memory.

The group belongs to the community and is kept running by your generosity and the time and effort given by the volunteers who respond to as many medical emergencies as possible. We are all doing our bit for the community one way or another. Thank you.

KEEP WELL and KEEP SAFE
